Arena37c Alice Nine series (2006) Oct&Nov

In last month's issue, we've heard the details on the new songs, this issue please tell us in detail about the various parts of NUMBER SIX

Nao:In order to create a lively variation of live and recorded drums, i tried to make it refreshing. The sharpness behind the hi-hat holds one of the keys to the song, so when Hiroto-kun said to me, "the sharpness is not enough", i searched for the sharpness and worked hard on it despite being a little exasperated.

Shou: With the sharpness and the refreshingness, it's probably like [Asahi] Super Dry. [beer]

Nao: Oooh~! That's good

Tora: We're exaggerating from the beginning (laughs)

Nao: I thought about various things, but it turned into this way after discussing with the original composer, Hiroto-kun.

Saga: I thought i'll do some kind of experimental bass sounds, but after recording i had to add in more things outside my expectations so i was surprised when i heard the completed version. Because the guitars were doing interesting stuff i thought it'll be better if the bass is simpler, but that's who i was then so it'll definitely lead to the future me.

Hiroto: Saga-kun always include his reflections during interviews ne (laughs)

Shou: Why are you reflecting on yourself even before the release~ This time too, Saga voice did its best.

Saga: Saga voice was shy as always.

Shou: Until now, we always added in the chorus in the midst of synchronisation, but now that Saga-kun is doing the chorus live, we're gradually cutting down on that.

Saga: That's why i hope you won't look at me with strange eyes when I sing the chorus [live].

Shou: Even though you've always had a cool image, when the chorus comes you'll get fired up.

Saga: I change when there's a mic.

Tora: There's a change in this song's guitar. We tried patching up the guitar parts via digital means, and made it into a hybrid guitar through Hiroto's request.

Shou: At first, he got the English wrong and said it as "hi-fi' [as opposed to hybrid]

Hiroto: The engineer-san completely didn't understand what i was saying but it was simply because my English was wrong. (laughs)

Tora: Hiroto's song has a certain prototype to it so it's easy to think about it. We collaborated on the guitar solo part.

Hiroto: It's not that we played separately but that we combined forces

Tora: What we can't do individually, we used both pairs of hands and feet (laughs)

Hiroto: Overall we want the song to have a summer-like sprint, but because we want to try out a hybrid feel as a band like the song Q. from Zekkeishouku, we also tried synthesizing the sounds. We tried cutting-and-pasting the usual guitar phrases we play as well, turn them inside out, and performed various trial-and-errors. Because we don't want it to be simply technical, we want it to be fun as well, so we thought hard about it. Alternating the raw parts and synthesized parts, i think we've managed to complete a work of variations and liveliness.

Shou: Because there is a clear message in the song, i thought it'll be good to have some form of reality in the singing, i lowered the key and challenged myself into doing a rap-like melody. Hiroto is always doing something new so being able to do something new myself was enjoyable. It starts with the hook of the song so i try to bring out my usual voice.

Because the beginning was a rap, i was surprised.

Shou: Really?

Hiroto: just what we were aiming for

Do you usually listen to rap?

Shou: I do. but i didn't think that i am that type of singer but Hiroto-kun's song calls for it so being able to naturally do that, it was a great thing. I'm not apt in sutra-like raps, but it's good that i got used to the song easily and managed to bring out my own colors.

Is this song a single with a DVD?

Shou: Nope there's only a DVD

There's no separate item for the song?

Hiroto: It's a film work.

The film's screenplay was written by Tora-kun right?

Shou: Tora was like a producer

How did you want this work to be when you first started on it?

Tora: At first when we decided to make a film work, it started out from just simply wanting to wear camouflage clothes.

Shou: We wanted to show how we managed to overcome various struggles and advance in our paths as a group and then the image of us doing our best in camouflage clothes appeared. During the tour, truly felt that various people had helped us along the way, and that's how the title came about, and then Tora-kun wrote a very detailed draft of the script for us.

You wanted to wear camouflage clothes?

Tora: Basically, i had the image of the 5 of us standing and facing some form of resistance in front of us.

Shou: There is a clear meaning or idea for our resistance, and we want to empathize on how our unity got us through. We wanted to convey the many things that couldn't be put into the lyrics, using our forte as a visual-kei band, and created the piece that brings life to our visuals.

There was a script too right?

Nao: 80% of the screenplay were lines [from the script]

Shou: It's like a drama

Approximately how long was the complete work?

Tora: About 15 minutes maybe?

Shou: Besides the song, 15 minutes. When we were filming, we were thinking, what was our jobs again?

Hiroto: We were totally like actors [...really? xD]

What's the settings like?

Tora: The settings were planned by the director, and then i think we are inserted into the scenes accordingly, but it's a little different when acting them out.

Hiroto: Our role names are the same as our own, but the characters are like people appearing in a drama.

Shou: The reckless me was pacified by Hiroto-kun. I thought, 'shouldn't it be the other way round? (laughs)' Saga-kun is one who quickly loses his temper and runs off.

Hiroto: We are all hot-blooded characters.

Shou: we're always saying 'daze' [more guyish way of speaking]

Lyrics Keyword Interview from NUMBER SIX. and Blue Planet

☆Awkward (Who's the most awkward person?) [or clumsy or stumbles easily etc]

Nao: Me

Hiroto: You're just insisting on that (laughs)

Nao: Since young, i've been clumsy in love......what? (laughs)

Shou: No comments

Hiroto: Nao-san is awkward?

Shou: I think it's Tora-kun. Even though he's kind he doesn't want to show it.

Tora: It means i'm living in an awkward way.

Shou: He's too un-awkward that he's awkward.

Tora: Since im said to be awkward, i might be. Saga-kun too is kind of awkward. For our members, whatever we're told to do we can usually do them, so in that sense we're capable but in terms of image, i think Saga-kun is awkward. (laughs) If Saga-kun is an apt person, it is not Saga-kun.

Nao: Saga-kun is clumsy with appliances. He said he composed a song, brought all his equipment, and the second he tried playing it, the song disappeared somehow (laughs).

Shou: For our song-choosing meetings, he had troubles three times in a row.

Saga: That's the reason why i don't have any songs recently

Hiroto: The first time, the song disappeared from the previous incident [what Nao said], the second time, he intended to put it into his iPod but it ended up not being in it.

Nao: the third time, he mistook the hamburgers on his screensaver for a virus (laughs). But when lots of hamburgers suddenly appear on your screen, you will get shocked right.

Saga: Right, it's not about being clumsy

Shou: Awkwardness for us, is kind of like Takakura Ken [actor] from 'Station Officer' the movie.

Nao: Awkwardness for me too, has that kind of dandy image.

Shou: We haven't reached that level yet.

Hiroto: I too think Tora-shi is too capable that he's inept. Jack of all trades, master of none (laughs)

Injuries all over (Your most serious injury)

Tora: I never had a serious injury!

Hiroto: What's full of injuries is Tora-shi's feet.

Tora: Because I'm barefooted, i get injuries all over my feet during lives. Recently the sole of my feet was so thick that even after stepping over glass fragments in my house i didn't realize it.

Hiroto: He lost the nerves on his feet

Nao: Maybe he's just slow (laughs)

Saga: During my teenage baseball days, when i did a long throw with all my might, i got the baseball elbow [a condition due to repetitive pitching], my bone protruded and i was like an alien. But there's a secret moving story to it. After that, while bearing the intense pain and pitching, we won the match!

Nao: Weren't you a benchwarmer (laughs)

Shou: In a junction on my way home from school, I was knocked down by a truck from Aomori transporting apples. In the instant where there was a 'DON!' sound, i saw the blue sky and collapsed somewhere. I had complicated fractures.

Nao: You don't realize what happened the instant you got run over by the car right?

Shou: I didn't know, i didn't know

Nao: I got knocked down before as well, but it was like "Eh, i was knocked down?" I was in the midst of a blizzard with my hoodie over my head crab-walking, then after crossing the traffic, suddenly i saw something white. It was the sky.

Hiroto: Like you were looking at yourself?

Nao: I didn't know what happened

Shou: It feels numb so there weren't pain either

Nao: I felt fine at that point in time, but after a few hours it started hurting (laughs). Even though such a thing happened, the most painful things were the wounds in my heart.........

Hiroto: When i was 5, i was playing on top of a rock in a park jumping around, far away a female friend called out to me and at that instant the corner of the rock hit in between my eyebrows and i ended up with 4 stitches for that. Before i realized it, blood was all over and my friend was shouting "Hiroto-kun died". I thought "I died"

Dream (a dream that left the deepest impression)

Tora: I know when i enter dreams. The instant i close my eyes, it felt like I'm riding on a jet coaster and if i can bear with it a while, i can freely play around in the world of dreams. [wow Tora is a lucid dreamer o.o] But that jet coaster is kind of scary so if i can't handle it i'll end up waking up. It's fun to be able to do anything in the midst of dreams but if i go somewhere i don't know i'll end up waking up. Recently i can't ride jet coasters though.

Hiroto: It wasn't because of age restrictions? (laughs)

Tora: What's incredible is that, in the world of dreams even if you thought you've been there for a long time only 5 minutes passed in reality. By the way if I don't sleep facing up i can't enter a dream.

Saga: I often dream about preparing for school and then waking up having to prepare for school again for real. Like, I finally managed to stay up till the 5th period of class and just when i thought 'i can finally get back', i ended up waking up and have to go to school again. During those times, i simply took a break from school (laughs)

Shou: I play games a lot so i often have fantastical dreams. If i stay in an inn, I'll dream of a familiar with a rabbit head making stew, and another side, under that starry sky it will be riding off in a rail car. In general, i have many fairy-tale like dreams.

Nao: I was in pre-school during an overnight stay i dreamt a scary dream that i was chased by Ronald McDonald. Since then, even though i like McDonald's, i don't like Ronald.

Hiroto: If i slept with the TV switched on, I know I'll definitely dream. Since it's noisy with the TV on i can't go into deep sleep, so i dream from the information that was shown on TV. Recently i was hooked on the manga Emblem of Roto [dragon quest], and the tv was showing a little of the 9-11 terrorist news, i saw a dream that's a mixture of the two. With the devil king being Osama bin Ladin, i ws sweating a lot when i woke up (laughs)

Even if tomorrow ends (If today's is the last day on earth)

Tora: I want to do lives. Also i want to gather people i haven't met a long time and create an uproar. Like "Hey we're gonna die tomorrow, yeah!"

Hiroto: We can probably get high spirited not knowing when we'll disappear.

Tora: If everyone's gonna die, I think people's tension won't go that down

Hiroto: If it was a mistake and i ended up being the only dying it'll be tragic though.

Nao: you'll be laughed at, like "that guy was in high spirits"

Saga: For me too, there's only lives. It'll probably not be much difference from any other day. It'll be the same as always, going back home, living out the day normally. Facing towards the end, i want to do a countdown live.

Nao: Moving beyond the homo sapiens years (laughs)

Shou: Towards destruction (laughs)

Saga: I'll be great if we can do it at the [Tokyo] Dome.

Tora: It'll be a scramble for the dome. Any artist will want to perform there right?

Shou: I'm interested in knowing how many people will want to spend their last day with alice nine. Besides lives, since i haven't properly displayed filial piety i want to do something for my parents.

Hiroto: I want to hang out with good friends. I'll say all that i couldn't say until then, i want to be happy. It seems that if the next day is death day i can become happy. Last of all, i want to do sky-diving

Nao: I will buy a video camera and get someone to take a "Alice nine last day documentary" for us.

Hiroto: After hundreds of years later, maybe future people can see it

Nao: Like hundreds of years ago there were such low-class living beings (laughs)

Shou: Humans = Nao-san, maybe they'll put your picture in money bills (laughs)

Nao: Let's take Saga-kun too. In that case, Saga-kun might appear in the 1000 yen notes (laughs).

Regret (What do you regret in your life?)

Tora: The fact that i went to high school. Personally i thought it was an unnecessary period of time, so it was better not going. It's not that i'm bad at socializing it's just that i don't have a common topic to talk with friends. There weren't many who liked music so our conversations don't complement.

Saga: I don't have much, but if i have to say something i think it would be better if i had been more serious in baseball

Nao: See, you were a benchwarmer.

Shou: It would have been better if i had studied music more. I didn't think of becoming a musician so now thinking about it, it'd be better if i had aimed to do music from the beginning

Hiroto: I have no regrets at all. In this world, everything can be 100, 100 can be 0, 0 can be 100, for everything, a plus can be a minus, a minus can be a plus, with both minus and plus, everything becomes 0.

Shou: He's an alien. He read too much manga (laughs)

Hiroto: In other worlds, even if there's something that i regret doing later, in exchange i'd have accomplished other things, in the end, it comes plus minus 100, and becomes 0 in the end.

Shou: Just go to the library

Hiroto: Because i can hold my feelings to 100, i won't regret anything

Shou: A saying from a philosopher goes "Everything can be alpha and omegas, 0 and 100" but it's amazing that Hiroto said it here.

Hiroto: And also, pi and π don't intersect.

Shou: For some reason, i'm sweating (laughs) [sweatdrops maybe? ^^;;]

Nao: In the same way life is something that results from the choices we make, what if all our paths were decided by gods, won't that be interesting?

Tora: After philosphy now we're talking about gods? (laughs)

Nao: Like Shou-kun, i also regret that i didn't start on music earlier on, but i have no other regrets

Night (What you do at night)

Tora: Watch DVD. Recently i do marathons and skateboarding at night. After that i watch DVD, take a bath, then sleep. However, I'm can't stay in one spot so I can't stay calm in my own house, so i'll loiter around aimlessly just like monkeys in cages.

Saga: I probably read books or watch live videos. In the middle of the tour I'm like someone who's dead, but at home, I'll be using the vacuum cleaner, use the bath, use the dryer, listen to CD, in any case I'm a noisy, annoying person. Somehow when it's night, i want to play more explosive sounds than mid day.

Shou: Game. The end.

Hiroto: I won't be at home

Shou: Sleepwalking

Hiroto: It's a waste to be sitting at home at night so i won't be there. I'll find friends, go somewhere to gaze at stars, play billards somewhere etc. Today I'm pressed to finish the designs for goods so i probably can't sleep tonight though (laughs)

Shou: Hiroto-kun's reply [phone] mails are usually around 3am

Hiroto: That's the time period where i'm most active

Nao: I'm a noctornal person so when it's around 12am I'll start getting motivation. I'll watch DVD, play silent drums so sometimes various troubles happen. Recently the street racing blood in me starts to squirm in me, so i'll drive to the convenience store, or spend the night laughing bitterly to Alice Nine's radio .
