After Senkou, do you have a specific vision of what's next?
Saga: At that time, feeling wise, I wanted to do a song that's completely different from Senkou. Actually, there're already a few songs that can be used for an album, so i thought for the single before the album, it might be good to have a tune that's like a ballad. But, after meeting Okano-san, we had a drastic shift in path.
In the first place, how did you get to work with Okano-san?
Saga: At first, Shou and Hiroto met him at a live or something, and I heard that they had a talk which led to pretty good mutual feelings. For the band as well, we're at the stage where we want to step up, and have an objective view that we never had until now, and more than anything, we want to develop ourselves more. We wanted to work with a strict person. And Okano-san is just the right person to fit those criteria.
To start with, a strict person?!
Saga: Right, someone with no hesitation (laughs). There are many different types of producers, but anyway, i thought it'll be good to have a strict person who will be able to elevate our awareness. We want to develop our mental side, so a person who will attack on the parts that we don't notice will be good, and unexpectedly Okano-san was the perfect person for us.
Had he been working with you since the choosing of songs?
Saga: Yes. Previously, within just the band, we had choosen 3 songs, but when we first met Okano-san, he said "This is not good". Because it was new, we all bowed ne. [i believe he meant metaphorically] Making us all bow completely like that, unexpectedly it was a good feeling.
Was Saga-kun's composition in there too?
Saga: Yes. But I didn't really got down or frustrated about it. He just mentioned that taking out a ballad melody song meant for an album, is not good. Okano-san seems to use a single to compete, attacking via a song within Alice Nine, which replaced our mindset. Before letting people in society hear it, Okano-said, make a song that will roar! and from there my fighting spirit started to burn. If that's the case, then I thought I'll write a song that will highlight the weapon that Alice Nine had been fostering all these while - the sparkling side of us. And then, 「Stargazer:」 was what I spent about one day working on. After [Okano-san] hearing it, he praised me saying "If you put your heart in, you can do it".
That's good ne.
Saga: For me, I think that nervous feel is really good. Because having done this for a long time, there's a monotonous feel in the workplace, there's also an on-hold feeling, and so I don't like that. For members, for companions, I can comment on one step, but i can't say comments that's 2 steps into the interior. But this time I received a lot of opinions that's sharp and objective, and to the core, so I did the pre-production with a nervous feel.
For the pre-production as well, he's together with you guys too right.
Saga: Yes. He came to MachiStar [i believe it's a place but I can't be sure m(_ _ )m] and did it together with us. He also thought about the arrangement and various parts all with us, that kind of nervous feeling is the merit that i had wished for. To say things to that point shows that he really thought a lot about us, even if his opinions may be harsh, we sincerely take note of it. Because he's serious about it, we firmly take in his opinions; there's a feeling of returning the favor. What Okano-san always said to me are things like "There's no need to limit yourself" and "Don't make any weird compromises". It seems that when he heard Alice Nine for the first time, there's an air of us being a back-band. In order to make the vocals stand out, doing things like strangely extending it back out and taking it into consideration etc, he pointed out to us that those factors are not necessary. It's better to make it easier to listen to and convey to the listener with a heavy impact; the ararngement and music consciousness that he said we ought to have is something I can really understand. Things like how to objectively promote [a song] to listeners, how to make [a song] such that kids will want to be in a band; I got a stronger awareness from all these things. Certainly those were things that we also didn't notice, and because it's a single, that's why these are important, so we adjusted and changed our thinking. I think I managed to experience a little what's it's like to compose a song that's easy to listen to. Previously, i naively thought that to compose a song like that, it just has to be familiar to the ears. But pop, catchy songs etc need skills to compose, so I realized how hard it is. I've learnt a lot.
Firmly with you all, you created the songs ne.
Saga: Even if you say that, it's not really a song that's just dyed with my colors, it's a song that brings out our good parts. He also didn't do things like, you should do things that way, or give any specific indications, he merely told us what we lack. It kinda of feels like, in order to make the horse [Alice Nine LOL] run faster, he's the person who uses a whip and goes bang bang hitting on the [horse's] ass. (laughs)
With regards to the bass, how was it?
Saga: He was a bassist, so before that [recording of the bass], I was aware that he might be the hardest on me, but unexpectedly he didn't say anything at all. Still, my way of thinking about the bass and with regards to my readiness, in this short period time, was significantly influenced. As expected, the mentality to be conspicious is an important thing.
From the time that Saga's bass model came out, your conscious for the bass seems to have changed quite significantly.
Saga: About that, after Okano-san appeared, I was even more motivated. It seems that if I play just a bit of a boring phrase, he'll say "This is boring~ I'm falling asleep", so I often have the consciousness that I have to play a cool bass phrase. I hate losing even more now, and I considerably have the feeling of "I'll definitely play it like it's howling", so I think his existence is really big. What I wished for is that kind of nervous feeling; this time, the single's production workplace atmosphere is as that, if the next album can be done, I think it can become a really good work. Because, we' don't usually do things so frantic like now, there's no feeling of when we might be done in. But now, there's is this vague feeling of franticness, this is the best tension.
「Shinkirou」, that's Tora-shi's song right?
Saga: Tora's song has things that my songs don't have, there's a different kind of catchyness ne. It won't be a surprise if any of the other song becomes the lead song, I think there's an equal amount of catchyness to both. If we're just in a band, somehow there's the tendency to make things complicated. We forget the thing about a single, before we knew it, the song becomes one where the music notes, the development became too much, and to restrain that, we have to take care to go back and compact it. In conclusion, a single is a band's namecard, so in order to send our music to different people's ears, i think we have managed to create a cool piece of work.
