2013 is ALICE NINE's 9th anniversary after their major label debut. To open their anniversary year, they are going to release a single three months in a row. The first song 'DAYBREAK' showed their strength as a rock band. This great song couldn't have been made without their 9 years' experience. This will be one of their best songs with its refined sound and confidence in it. BARKS has interviewed ALICE NINE on what they're feeling about their 9th anniversary. Also, BARKS will feature 3 consecutive articles on ALICE NINE for 3 months based on 9 keywords. This first month, we interviewed them on 'Character','Birth' and 'Name of the band' to find out more about how they formed the band and who they really are.
-'We just wanted to be like some bands we thought were cool. We just wanted to be what we wanted to be.(SAGA)'
--Your 9th anniversary year began from moving to a new record label. Has that affected any relationship within the band??
SHO(Vo): Like we suddenly disagree on stuffs? No, it didn't matter.
TORA (G): We just don't have any reason for that.
SHO: We were just saying 'We should grab a drink after this.' (Laugher from everyone)
TORA (G): We're kind of like a college band in that way.
SHO: I guess we're like a high school band when it comes to backstage talk (LOL)
--Even though the members stay the friends as they used to be, the band sound has changed, I think. Especially 'GEMINI' and '9' created a great foundation for ALICE NINE as a rock band. Without those two, I don't think 'DAYBREAK''s smooth feel couldn't have come out.
SHO: After 'Vandalize', SAGA has been leading the band as a main composer, leveling up the band's awareness for creation. We used to be a 'band' before but after 'GEMINI' and '9', we were a 'rock band' in a true sense. That put together our focuses onto one music and achieved higher goals. Without it, we couldn't have been as relaxed as we were on 'DAYBREAK'
SAGA; We knew how we wanted to look but weren't sure how we wanted to sound. We started as a jam band and it's been trial and errors all the way through. That's why every single has different color. But if we have a firm musical ground, there will be more meaning to the flexibility. So, we started thinking about finding our back bone since 'VANDALIZE'.
--So is it like a premonition, SAGA?
SAGA:'We just wanted to be like some bands we thought were cool. We just wanted to be what we wanted to be.'
SHO; Then, when are we achieving that goal?
Everyone; Now!! (Laughter)
-'If we make it easy to understand, this single is a kind of like Italian dinner in Genovese style. Next one is thick Tonkotsu ramen.'
SAGA; 'DAYBREAK' sounds different because we have already formed the band's back bone. Without it, it would sound different. 'DAYBREAK' is a catchy pop tune but since we have our band's basis, it sounds cool. We've completed this mission in '9'. So, from here we should start color it up.
--So the coloring process is 'DAYBREAK' as the first step to achieving your goals .
SAGA: Yes, it is. And it does mean'Daybreak' for us.
SHO:We had about 10 songs to choose from but after discussing it with our producer, staffs, and the members we decided on this one. I personally think the drive in the chorus and the positive feeling was the key. It used to be a little more like a punk song, right?
TORA: Yeah.
SHO: Then we totally changed the arrangement.
--That's how refined UK Taste came along with the song.
HIROTO(G): This time, Mr.HIRATE(Satoru) joined us as a producer. We've got to work with him closely. And this is how it turned out. It was so creative how he arranged the song.
SHO; He produces all the way to track down. So, the reason why it's so well crafted all the way is because of him.
SAGA: So, we always thought about how we wanted it to sound in the final form of the song and in-between the notes.
NAO(Dr): Mr. HIRATA originally is a drummer, so it was a lot of work for me. He himself tuned the drums thinking of how it should recorded and and recording started.
--SHO's vocal on such a cool refined tune came across directly. The lyric was so good and energetic.
SHO: I used to be under the pressure that I have to write good lyrics especially for singles. I read books and watched movies , jotting down some ideas. However, this song really made me think I have to face myself to write to the melody. So all the vocabulary is from myself. If this song doesn't work, I'm just talentless. This song meant so much that I could say this. In the end, the song represent us as who we really are now.
--the music video was also gorgeous. How was the shoot?
SHO: We shot it on the dune in Shizuoka. We got there before sunrise.
TORA: It's not CG.
SHO: We shot it -5℃ in blowing wind ,dressed only for spring.
HIROTO: It doesn't really show in the video.
SHO: If you look at it again knowing this, you'll see. Look for SAGA when we are walking in the end. You'll go 'Oh, that's it!'
SAGA: I was screaming 'I can't do this.' inside of my heart. I was down to the bottom of my mental energy.
SHO:Members blamed me for naming the song 'DAYBREAK'.
--Tell me about the B-side song 'HIMITSU (Secret)'. This is your kind of rap and it sounds more urban.
SAGA: We've been talking about the back bone as a rock band but in reality we've been listening to urban sounds without distorted guitar sound. I kind of wanted to go further to this direction and wanted to make it current and urban. I even wanted to try out new sounds for playing live.
- I really liked this hip-hop-like direction.
SAGA: Having said that, we have no background in hip hop.
NAO:I'll be under construction for 3 years(LOL)
--What kind of ALICE NINE are we going to see?'
SHO:'If we make it easy to understand, this single is a kind of like Italian dinner in Genovese style. Next one is thick Tonkotsu ramen.'
HITOTO: And that's homemade kind.
NAO:Al dente (LOL).
